报告简介:The woodcrafts play an important role in terms of "wood culture", as the great number of artisans and woodworkers in Vietnam are still pratising the traditions, built up by many generations.

The elements for producing that "wood culture" are composed by the nation's history, language systems, economic activities, and the traditional customs that relate to the the most essential daily needs of each individual and community, such as clothes, eating habits, lifestyle, transportation, social relations, weddings, births, funerals, worshiping, ceremonial anniversaries, calendar, art, entertainment, and the like.

Vietnam has had a long history of wood sculpture, dating back almost 10,000 years. This is the age of the first carvings of human faces and animals found in a Dong Noi cave in Hoa Binh Province. During the Dong Son cultural period, the ancients created houses with boat-shaped curved roofs.

The peak time for woodcarving was from the 16-17th century. Statues of Budda in famous pagodas such as Tay Phuong and But Phap earned acclaim as the most beautiful. The artwork, "Bodhisattva with a thousand eyes and thousand arms", which is 3.7 meters in heigth and having 958 arms is the incomparable work of skilled hands and represents the wide knowledge of artisans. Besides building the palaces, woodcarving artisans proved their outstanding abilities though popular architecture such as village communal houses, temples, and pagodas.

In recently, many woodcraft villages are found throughout the country. Their products are varied from architecture, furniture, worship objects, wooden statues and toys.

This talk will focus on the materials used, the techniques, the nomenclature, the aesthetics and the culture prevailing in the various fields of woodcraft. The cases of the following wooden cultural properties will be reviewed on this occasion:
1. Traditional wooden houses: The Bahnar communal house, the E De long house, Hmong house, King (Viet) house, Giarai Tomb, and Cotu Tomb.
2. Buddist sculptures
3. Musical instruments and other.
