报告摘要:Wood has played a vital role in shaping North American culture since the first European pioneers began to settle in the 15th century. North America is blessed with the largest volume of commercial timber resources in the world next only to Russia. Individuals in the United States consume nearly four times as much wood per capita as the world average (about 1.8 cubic meters annually per person). In a culture that is so dependent upon wood, it is not surprising that a significant wood-producing industry has developed over the past 150 years, and over this time period significant resources have been expended in the areas of wood research and education. This presentation will offer a brief historical overview of some of the highlights of research and development (R&D) efforts related to wood and wood products followed by a discussion of research funding sources and challenges and a look at the history and current status of education in the field of wood science and technology. The discussion will close with a brief overview of the services and activities of the Forest Products Society, a non-profit technical association dedicated to the collection and dissemination of technical information related to wood and wood products.
