1. Some remarks on culture, architecture and materials
(1) The first building material in Europe (of mankind) was wood:Lightweight ( easy to transport)
Easy to cut and to transform
Resistent and naturarelly available as posts and beams
Often it was mixed with stones and earth to fill the gaps
(2) Even the Greek temples were originally in wood.
(3) Only when there was no wood available:
Because forsts did not exist
Had been overexploited ( around the mediteranean Sea – shipbuilders)
Had been controled by the authorities (use for energy – saltproduction)
(4) Pure stone buildings with roods in wood were build
Or for defense ( castles, walls, bridges – wood could easier be destroyed )
Or for the demonstration of power and religous warship
(5) Pure stone buildings were erected-with cheap or forced labour (gothic cathedral, pyramides) for the eternity.
2. Building with wood before the industrialization (<1800)
3. The use of wood and the industrialization (1800-2000)
4. Building in the future the challenge of sustainability
5. Examples of actual buildings conclusion
1. We use the under-exploited forest.
2. We create local jobs.
3. We are reducing CO2 emission.
4. We help reduce the consumption of Petrol.
5. We help to increase quality of life. We help to maintain and to develop the European cultural heritage and its future.
