报告摘要:The United States has had a rich history of forestry and wood-based culture. Our forests are a major strategic asset and are critical to the social, economic, and ecological well being of the United States. The United States ranks third of all countries in volume of standing forest timber. Of the 305 million hectares of U.S. forestland, 130 million hectares are held publicly and 175 million hectares are held privately. Abundant forest resources and prudent forest management have allowed U.S. industry to utilize wood as its single largest material source for industrial production. With approximately 330 million metric tons of wood harvested annually, the United States is by far the world’s largest industrial timber-producing nation. The U.S. forest products industry relies on large, renewable, and accessible forest resources to manufacture an array of products that are indispensable to our modern society. Over 250 million metric tons of wood and wood-based products are consumed each year in the United States. These products touch nearly every aspect of people’s lives:
.Wood products contribute more than $240 billion per year to the gross domestic product.
.Wood products account for more than 1.1 million American jobs.
.In 2004, approximately 1.9 million housing units were constructed in the United States, accounting for over 50 million cubic meters of lumber, 2 billion square meters of panel products, and 195 million lineal meters of I-joists.
.Annual paper and paperboard consumption is currently about 110 million metric tons.
.Nearly 90 percent of all consumer and industrial goods shipped in the United States include some form of corrugated container or solid fiber partition or cushion made from wood-derived fiber. Production of wood products at this level requires considerable research into the technical understanding of wood based products to make the best use of our raw material. This talk will focus on the rich history of wood culture in the United States, the use of forest products, contemporary issues related to forest products, and future challenges in research and development.
