Public placemaking is akinto making a real home for everyone in a community. Successful public placemakingis possible with the concerted efforts of the community members and variousstakeholders. In the case of Los Baños, Laguna, Philippines, it has always beennegotiating with the issue of public spaces dueto its limited available public area for leisure purposes of its localresidents. Hosting several government offices specifically the nationaluniversity can add up to the issue of restricting public spaces, therebyincreasing the challenges of the local government units to strategically planfor its local public spaces for placemaking by the local community. On theother hand, Surabaya, East Java, Indonesia, a port city with a sprawling greenmetropolis has ample public spaces. Common to both is the presence of bamboo asan element in the landscape and as a main material for making of hardscapes.The current study determined how people valued bamboo in its quest for public placemaking and overall enjoyment and wellbeing. It also aimed to identify the drivers for public placemaking, and the public policies concerning the efforttowards strengthening the connection between the people and the place.Participative observation, interviews and review of secondary data were done.The study showed that people in Surabaya, East Java, Indonesia and in LosBanos, Laguna, Philippines had valued the presence bamboos as part of their public spaces and formed part of their public placemaking. People associated bamboo with peace, quite, comfort, place identity, avenues for socialization,deep spirituality and wellbeing.
