摘要：With a share of 47% of the total area Austrian forests provide a multitude of economic, ecological and social services for its inhabitants. During thousands of years a diversity of forest management practices has shaped the wooded landscapes. Traditional knowledge has greatly contributed providing multiple goods and services, wood, food, raw material, energy, livelihood security and quality of life. While in the open terrain traces of traditional multiple uses have been destroyed by agriculture activities they are still present and partly visible in wooded areas. Objects refer for example to Neolithic fortifications and settlements, Bronze age mining activities, traffic routes dating back to Roman times, abandoned villages from the Middle Ages, furnaces and places of charcoal burning from Early Modern times and only recently abandoned farmsteads. In 2003 the 4th Ministerial Conference on the Protection of Forests in Europe focussed on the promotion of the social and cultural dimensions of sustainable forest management. Due to the decrease of traditional farming, migration, and the introduction of modern harvesting techniques artefacts are increasingly endangered. Caused by market changes also the demand for traditional wooden products decreased during the most recent 50 years. Thus, almost unnoticed by the society the declining use of renewable materials in the fields where handicraft work dominated is associated with the loss of knowledge related to the application of these materials. However, parts of this forgotten heritage have been preserved.
The paper introduces a recently developed working programme related to the safeguarding of the cultural forest-related heritage. The Austrian initiative is based on voluntary commitments and characterized by a high degree of engagement, motivation and networking of stakeholders. It shows how joint efforts are able to merge the safeguarding of the forest-related cultural heritage with projects concerning the economic development of remote areas. The study intends to reveal the Austrian attempts to put International and European agreements into action for the benefit of the local people. It makes acquainted with the network Forest Culture in Austria, its targets and visions and introduces its stakeholders. The initiative presented in this paper addresses efforts to raise awareness of forest owners and managers by adequate publications and non-formal specific educational programs. Particularly the post-grade course on Forest and Culture and its curriculum will be introduced.
