摘要:The typical name for Sandal wood is 'Shrikhand' although the Hindi name 'Chandan' and seto chandan is also common. This species has historically been cultivated, processed, and traded since ancient times specially in South India. Sandle wood and the oil produce a distinctive fragrance that has been highly valued for centuries. Not only Hindusim, it has significant cultural place in Jainism, Buddhisim, Islam, Chainise and Japanese religions. Since sandal wood is not indigenous to Nepal, interest has recently increased in many parts of the country. There is natural forest as a well as plenty of plants growing in private land in Pyuthan and surroundings.

Around 40 years ago, Mr. Mathbar Singh Khatri of Dakhakwadi VDC-3 Pyuthan had planted 2 seedlings brought from Madras India. These two trees nurtured by him started fruiting after five years. When trees were getting matured amount of seed also increased. The nature of fruiting is irregular and birds love fruits .It is one of the strong evidence that from very beginning seed dispersed by birds and created natural regeneration in ward no 2, 3 & 4 of Dahakwadi VDC on Private land as well as in national forest. It is now expanding rapidly in other VDCs in Pyuthan district.

There are abundantly germinated seeding and sapling in marginal (kharbari) land . along with irrigation channel and lower part of government forest. These valuable resources need appropriate protection and management. About a decade ago, District Forest Office. Pyuthan has started protection and management of Sandle wood forest with establishment of demonstration plot. Seedlings production and plantation activities are being increased specially in private sector. According to DFO record, more than Hundered Thousands seedlings were distributed to local users and private sector by 2016. Silviculture Division of Department of Forests has established a seed stand and Department of Forest Survey and Research has started to establish a research plot. Resently, DoF has given high priority to expand the cultivation practices in collaboration with local users in Pyuthan districts.

Sandle wood is generally considered a slow growing tree in natural forest conditions although it grows faster in plantation. As it is sensitive plant for accepting its host there is need of precaution on selecting silvicultural operation for better growth. Sandle wood is new species for Nepal however economically vital for income generating activites in our condition. It is quite late to develop a sustainable forest management guideline with appropriate silviculture system and management operations This paper will try to address the seed management, nursery techniques, plantation and appropriate silviculture system for Sandle wood management in Nepal.
