摘要:Wood has been a kind of familiar material with the Vietnamese people, used to build house, make furniture, make everyday objects and decorate objects since ancient time. Long time ago, to enhance the beauty of wood products, Vietnamese people had used sculpture method to decorate. Vietnamese wood sculpture had been changed in presentation over time, it had documented and reflected the historical culture in every period of history.
This article presents the development and characteristics of Vietnamese wood sculpture through the periods as well as influences of historical and cultural factors on them.
The research showed that Vietnamese wood sculpture has been actually developed from the Ly and Tran dynasty (968-1400) and flourished in the XVII and XX centuries. The art of wood sculpting at the Ly dynasty had absorbed both the art of Chinese and ChamPa of Vietnam and concentrated development in the royal palace and pagodas. The sculpture style was harmonious, the motif theme often reflect idea of feudalism and Buddhism. However, the art style of wood sculpture at the Tran dynasty was more powerful, generalized and lively than sculpture of Ly dynasty.
The wood sculpture in XVI- XVIII centeries was the most prosperous period of Vietnamese wood sculpture. It was developed in the royal palace, pagoda, and especially communal house, but was presented differently in motif theme. The art of wood carving on the communal house at that time is so featured. The motif theme had feature of deep folk, focused on daily activities of people lives, contrariwise with wood sculpture in the Royal palace, which always obey the rules of feudal.
The art of wood carving of Nguyen dynasty in XVIII-XIX centeries had prospered in the royal palace, pagoda, communal house, and in folk house. Sculpture objects were rich in fields of architecture, furniture, decoration. Caved art was combined of art style of Chinese Qing dynasty with ancient Europe. Decoration method had been combined of golden lacquer with mosaic to create splendor for products. The themes of motives focused on feudalism ideas on the products of the Royal palace and liberal of everyday life as fun activities, longing for happiness and peaceful life on the folk objects.
Nowadays, wooden sculpture has developed strongly on traditional wood villages of Vietnam. The products are very plenty of kinds as furniture, cabinets, shelves, beds, wooden doors, picture, statue, etc.
