摘要：
The agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development is a plan of action for the prosperity of the planet, it seeks to alleviate the most pressing social and environmental problems of the world. The forestry sector has the potential to contribute in the mitigation of two of the most prominent problems, poverty and climate change. Around the world the timber industry produces roughly, 2 billions of cubic meters every year providing jobs to thousands of people; however, those jobs have not been enough to combat poverty in rural areas. Therefore, there is a need to increase the participation of forestry sector in the development of the nations by generating incentives to create jobs that will fill the demand for greener and decent jobs. In this sense, forestry educational systems play an important role, they are responsible for training professionals with the competences needed to participate in society as active members of change. The forestry sector has a myriad of opportunities to foster ideas and convert them to a product that have value for others. There is an increasing interest for more interdisciplinary curriculums that include generic competences into the current traditional forest education, generic competences have the ability to familiarize students with real and complex issues that will help them to perform better at their workplace. The Global Outlook on Forest Education is a 4-year project designed to identifying competencies that are considered of high importance in the forestry labor market. Results showed that leadership and management, human interactions, and communication were observed as competences needed to perform forest related jobs. Integrating learning of generic skills and competences as well as social sciences into more traditional forest education is a step forward to achieve the sustainable development goals.
