Abstract:
Regional influences and the history of colonization of the Philippines can be found in the wood furniture of the Philippines.  This paper will look at how these regional influences and colonial history have found expression in the various types of wood furniture found in specific towns or places in the three major island groups of the Philippines. The Spanish colonization of the Philippines since the 1500s has influenced the wood furniture industry on two aspects.  With the establishment of Roman Catholic churches in every town, there was need for ecclesiastical furniture requiring craftsmen adept at imitating European designs for altars, lecterns, chairs, pews and other accessories. For the bustling cities of trade and commerce, particularly in the provinces of Ilocos in North Luzon, Pampanga, Bulacan and the city of Manila in Central Luzon, and Bacolod in the Visayas, wood furniture patterned after European designs became in vogue and highly in demand particularly in the houses of well-known politicians, tobacco and sugar cane plantation or hacienda owners and businessmen.  It became a status symbol for well-to-do or rich families to own these intricately carved wood furnitures. On the other hand, for the indigenous peoples of the Cordillera mountains in Northern Luzon, wood furnitures are functional as found in the typical residence house, or used in ceremonies as the “hagabi” bench of the Ifugaos. Lastly, the furnitures of the “Royal House of the Torogan” of the Maranaos of the third largest island of the Philippines, Mindanao, will be described.

　　Myrna Bituin 女士毕业于菲律宾曼努•鲁亦斯•奎松大学，1972年毕业于菲律宾Guagua国家学院并获得文学硕士学位。曾多次赴国外参加学习和培训。Myrna Bituin女士和她的丈夫 Jose Bituin先生是菲律宾JB木工（现名为Betis工艺品有限公司）的创始人。他们的企业是菲律宾最大的家具制造企业，主营手工实木家具雕刻，产品出口到美国、欧洲、中东地区和亚洲等国家。

　　Myrna Bituin女士今年66岁，作为高级顾问，她依然活跃在她的家族企业，从事营销和精加工方面的咨询工作。与此同时，她也热心公益事业，是一位知名的环保主义者。她是主张修复菲律宾贝蒂斯教堂的先驱，这一教堂目前已被认定为国家遗产。她还从事特殊儿童公益活动组织和残疾人友好社区的基金会的工作。她与菲律宾贸易和工业部门合作，共同促进竹产品的推广，积极参与发展竹子作为木材的替代材料。

Mrs. Myrna Bituin was graduated from Manuel L. Quezon University on 1972 then got her master degree in Literature from Guagua National College on 1972. Myrna Bituin and her husband, Jose Bituin are the founders of JB Woodcraft, now Betis, Craft Inc. – one of the country’s biggest furniture manufacturing firm. It is a solid wood hand carved furniture manufacturing company exporting to the US, Europe, Middle East and Asia.

Mrs. Myrna Bituin is now enjoying the fruits of her labor at the age of 66. While she is still active as a Senior Consultant especially to the Marketing and Finishing operation of the Bituin Group of Companies, she also spends considerable time in her social and civic missions. She is a well known environmentalist. She is in the forefront on the restoration of Betis Church as it had been declared a national treasure of the country by NCCA. Her work includes on the activities of special children, assisting the foundation to make people with disability productive to the community. In collaboration with the Department of Trade and Industry she is also promoting the essential use of bamboo products. Today, she is actively involved in the development of bamboo as an alternative material to wood, anchoring bamboo on climate change, disaster in mitigation and livelihood.
