Abstract
Wood is composed of different types of cells who present microscopic features characteristic of each botanical species or genus. It is generally possible, on the basis of a small fragment of wood, to determine which species of tree it came from, among the thousands growing on the African continent. The botanical identification of some sculptures and masks from western tropical Africa, together with the determination of other archaeological, ethnographic data and Radiocarbon analysis, allow a better definition of selection criteria for timber in this Region. The wood from the sculptures all came from different species and it is sure that most of them are not chosen at random by the artist.

Speaker Profile
Egyptologist and wood anatomist, Dr. M. Victoria Asensi Amorós works with International Museums and Archaeological teams in order to identify wood artist artifacts’ made by different civilizations. At the moment she is involved in archaeological programs in Egypt (identifications of woods came from the first Arab installation in Cairo or some excavations from pharaonic Period), in France with the Louvre Museum or the Quai Branly Museum (African an Oceanian Objects) as an example, or with the Vatican Museums in Italy.
Actually she is based in Paris (France) as a scientific director of a company involved in wood anatomy identifications and se is a officeholder of a IUFRO Organization (5.10.01, Wood Culture).
