Abstract
Drawing from his career experiences, his volunteer work with IWCS, and his current volunteer work with the nonprofit organization, Greenwood, Mr. Kashdan will offer perspectives on integrating wood culture, forest sustainability, and social responsibility.  During his presentation, Mr. Kashdan will focus on the future potential impacts that wood experts (from artisans to foresters) can have on positively affecting the wood and forest dependent cultures worldwide.

Speaker Profile
Hank Kashdan retired in December 2010 from the position of Associate Chief (second in command) of the United States Forest Service.  His career spanned 37 years of service.  He worked on seven national forest units, the California Regional Office, and in the Washington D.C. Headquarters Office.   Mr. Kashdan began his Forest Service career as a surveyor which he performed in Northern Arizona and Northeastern Washington State.  He served as a timber sale contracting officer in Northern Idaho, and was the principal administrative officer on national forests in Montana and Oregon.    In the headquarters office, before becoming Associate Chief, Mr. Kashdan worked in Law Enforcement, as a staff for the United States Senate for two years, the Director of the Agency’s Budget Office, and as a Deputy Chief over all agency administrative functions.  
During his career, Mr. Kashdan had the opportunity to work with many external parties that helped him form perspectives about a people’s wood culture identity.  He has a keen interest in working with the International Wood Culture Society based on his Forest Service career experience in working with Native American tribes, small woodlot owners, pre-United States cultures, and indigenous populations in Southern Mexico and Peru.   Mr. Kashdan has a son who is a forester and works for the Forest Service in Montana.  His wife, Kim, is a Deputy Assistant Secretary at the United States Department of the Interior.
