报告摘要:The highest value, we’ve been taught for centuries, on wood is given to teak. Teak is very well known because of its durability and is very incredibly resistant to rot. That is why it has traditionally been used in nautical environments. The wood's natural resistance to rotting is largely due to its high content level of oil. Henceforth, teak is used for housing and furniture alike.

The problem with teak is that it needs 40 years to harvest, if one needs a 40 cm diameter of wood. So, although research has found ways in reducing the harvesting time through vegetative propagation and cloning, it still takes 15 to 20 years.

Another issue that is important for us to realize is that there are around 1000 species of wood in Indonesia and that these species are not yet explored. The tendency is that people would reject the wood because it is not teak. And even teak is also rejected when they have defects. Mass production buyers tend to choose straight grain and uniform color for their furniture products, which is unbelievably odd because wood is not plastic. Defects that wood has, like uneven color, loose knots, blue stain, are there because the trees have undergone the process of making themselves strong and sturdy. Wood that is not teak, or wood with what we call defects when explored and studied, can give as much bizarre to our beings as much as solid teak furniture can give pride to the owner.

An example of this is taken from a piece of wood that is abandoned on the side street. An artist with an understanding of wood being will be able to take out the beauty in the defects and turn the bunch of abandoned wood that wait to deteriorate into a beautiful product.

嘉宾简介:Ms. Peni R. Pramono has been working with furniture for 7 years. Although most of her job is related to managerial system in the company, to get the system into practice, she must deal extensively with the market, the production and even the finance. The first four years was spent with furniture made from reclaimed material of any species. The third year is slighly different only that the wood the company is using is mainly teak. To her than that, things are about the same. There are many products from the company that are made also from laminated scrap of wood. It is also in the present company that she learns more about teak. The experience thus far has given her a strong feeling to love environment issues.

In 2009, she wrote a book on wood certification after giving supervision for FSC auditing. She gave many seminars and workshop on the same area and as her concern of the environment is growing, she gets into a community that studies the exploration of wood for artistic products, some of which we can see in the presentation.
