Wood Industrial Development in Laos

报告摘要:Wood Industry in Laos is a part of the national economic development since it could reach 15% of National Income (2001). Those raw materials come from the government quotas and tree plantation. In 1960 the forest covered by 70% of the total area and it decreased down to 41.5% in 2002. In 2005, the government drafted new strategy for reforestation aims to reach 70% in 2020.

Following the guideline and regulation, the wood industry sector rushes to implement under the regulation in such of added value for finished products of exports, improvement of manufacturing in order to follow up the national standardization, quality assurance and the raw materials should come from tree plantation. It revealed that the number of the forest planted area is increasing up to 35, 173 hectares for 2010.

In 1976, the later year of Lao declared it’s independent, initially there were only 78 companies, in 2009 the number of manufacturers increased up to 2,115. But, 128 newly licensed, 806 on improvement, 1181 should be closed. Because out of the national standardization.

The predominant species is teak, Acacia mangium, rosewood and Eucalyptus camaldulensis. The products export to ASEAN 92%, China 3%, Japan 2%, Hongkong, America and Europe are 1%, some countries import products from Laos less than 1% are South Korea, Taiwan and Australia (Report of year 2008-2009).

The production processes require upgrading their machines, equipment, training for competency of workers, management, OHS. A case study of VALTIP project implemented from 2007-2011 enhance the range, quality and value of products produces from plantation timber in Laos.


嘉宾简介:Mr. Khamtan Phonetip, Wood Science lecturer and associate within the research fellow in value-added wood products in Laos. He is one of the researcher of Value Adding to Lao PDR Plantation Timber Products Project for over four years with facilitate the research implementing of the project with over of nine industry cluster in Laos.

Beside this he has widely assist Lao Network for Agroforestry Education (LaoNAFE) for over 3 years.

Mr. Khamtan Phonetip holds a Bachelor of Forestry from Faculty of Forestry the National University of Laos in 2007 and a Master in Quality and Environmental Management from School of Engineering the University of Boras, Sweden. He has a deep personal interest in quality and sustainable management, as recently his Master thesis entitled “Improvement of Manufacturing Quality” is published.
