报告摘要:
Cultural wooden objects that have survived hundreds and even thousands of years have been recovered mainly from environments which do not support the growth and activity of aggressive wood degrading basidiomycetes, such as white and brown rot fungi. However, such objects often display varying degrees of wood deterioration, resulting mainly from attack by bacteria that cause erosion and tunnelling of cell walls and fungi causing soft rot of wood. Fine structural investigations based on the use of electron microscopy have provided wealth of information on the fine texture of the degraded wood tissues at the level of cell wall, which is proving helpful in developing appropriate methods for conserving valuable wooden artefacts. The brief overview presented here describes the different microbial decay patterns commonly associated with ancient and cultural heritage wooden objects.
